Pertaining to laptop computers, maybe you can help me to understand something. I am really confused here…>?
I have been working on a friend’s laptop, that was attacked by viruses.
All i want to do, at this point, is just connect to the internet. At this point, I can’t.
Regarding wireless connections, what is the easiest way to do it? I’m just an end user, and know very little about computers…such as..
Can I set up a wireless connection, using my own isp?
I’m not very knowledgeable, so any help would be appreciated.
Thank you for your time. Take care.
We are missing some information here. I am assuming your friend downloaded the viruses, therefore he must have had an internet connection at some point. Did the connection stop working soon after he downloaded the viruses?
Some viruses are fairly tame and do not do much damage, others can be down right nasty, such as taking over a system or removing internet connections.
First thing, try to get rid of the virus. Does your friend have an up-to-date antivirus? If not, you can download a free anti-virus program from a different computer, save to a disk, and bring it to the laptop. Go to http://www.filehippo.com. You can download free programs (legally). There are two good free AV on the page, AVG and AVAST. Either one will do. Download, transfer to laptop and run. Hopefully it will be able to get rid of the virus.
If this does not work, try this. If your friend is running Windows XP or Vista, you can try doing a system restore. Click Start – Programs – Accessories – System Tools – System Restore (that is for XP, Vista is slightly different but look in the same area). This will allow you to try resetting your computer to a previous day. Try going back to before they got the virus.
Next issue, wireless. Connecting to a wireless connection is easy. The first thing you will need is a wireless router, most ISP’s can help you get a wireless router through your internet service, if not, a quick trip to Wal-mart or other retailer and grab a wireless router. Linksys, D-Link or Netgear are good brands and should be in the $50 range for a good wireless.
They will come with setup CD’s which will guide you through the whole process of setting up a network. Following the instructions will have you up and running quickly. However, I advise getting rid of the virus first or making sure the laptop is the only computer on the network until you get rid of the virus so it does not spread to other computers on the network.
Good luck.
Do you have a wireless router / network? The laptop may have a wireless card but you need something to actually connect to.
You need to do is get a wireless router. Then plug in the cords from modem then turn on laptop and it should recognize a wireless signal. then click on screens in bottom corner and click connect or disconnect. Select yours and bam your done.
A wireless router should work just fine for your home.
I had 2 different ones, both were easy to setup.
Buy one, plug it in, and follow the quick start guide.
Be sure to set up encryption on your wireless!
